Our Aging with Kindness program provides support to elderly residents in our community to ensure that they can comfortably and safely live in their own homes.

Senior community members "aging in place" or living in their own homes as they grow older extends their longevity and quality of life, and having access to safe and stable housing and community networks is essential to that outcome. Surveys of homeowners that partner with Habitat affiliates like ours show elderly members who live in their own homes are mentally and physically healthier, feel safer at home, and engage with their family and friends more.

Safe and accessible housing is a key social determinant of health. As leaders in housing, with our vast network across the United States and evidence-based approach, Habitat’s Aging in Place program advances both housing and health equity for older Americans.

About Aging with Kindness

With our Aging in Place initiative, we support elderly individuals in aging comfortably in their own homes and preferred communities. We work closely with a few social service agencies to assess personal requirements and offer essential home repairs, adjustments, and community support tailored to each homeowner's lifestyle, ensuring the preservation of their home (participants must own and reside in their homes) and independence.

Our services encompass a range of tasks, from exterior painting and landscaping to constructing handicap ramps, weatherization, installing grab bars, and providing other minor repairs. These services are designed to support elderly individuals in living out their days comfortably in a home and community they cherish.

Why we do it

The demand for Habitat’s work is substantial: the older population in the United States is growing rapidly, with projections indicating that by 2030, 20% of the population will be 65 or older. However, over 19 million older adults currently reside in homes that are in a state of disrepair or are not adequately equipped to meet their needs safely.
